Entitled mom tries to make 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter play with new sister-in-law's 3-year-old and 10-month-old, accuses her of being cold when they don't mix: 'I will not force my kid to be friends with anyone'

Blended families are an increasingly common occurrence in today's world, but that doesn't mean that making them happy and harmonious is an easy task. Everybody is likely to have slightly different expectations coming into this situation, and chaos can occur when these don't align with one another.

Perhaps the most common cause of familial tension in these scenarios is between a stepparent and stepchild, but it is possible for issues to occur within the wider family as well. Sometimes, a sibling dating a new partner is enough to bring significant disruption to the dynamic, something that is even more likely if they also have kids.

Being diplomatic in this kind of situation can be a challenge, not least when somebody seems to be pushing their newfound family relationships to the limit. It is important to maintain boundaries and stand your ground, even if that can sometimes mean ruffling some feathers.

  • This was what one woman thought when her brother brought his new girlfriend and her two kids into their family. This other woman was very insistent that her older children attempt to mix and play with her younger ones, despite it being apparent that they didn't really mix well.

    The mom felt that despite this, the family had been polite to their new additions, but her brother's partner felt otherwise. She criticized her for being cold and not wanting to integrate her children into the family, which her newfound sister-in-law refuted.

    While her brother apologized for his girlfriend's actions, she still wasn't happy, leaving the woman wondering if she had overstepped in maintaining her boundaries.

    itslunaslife NTA. You're not obligated to treat your brother's girlfriend's kids the same as your own, especially if you don't have a close bond or haven't been given a reason to. It's one thing to be kind and inclusive when possible but expecting equal treatment and acting entitled to it crosses a line. It's your family, your boundaries, and your resources. She doesn't get to dictate how you use them.

    Humble_Suit_2402 NTA. These boundaries are totally fair. Natalie seems to have unrealistic expectations, especially this early into the relationship. It's not cruel to protect your space or prioritize your own kids. Empathy doesn't mean sacrificing honesty or comfort. She may be hurting, but that doesn't make her entitled to your energy or parenting style.

I was the same way with my kids, loved them to the moon and back, but have a low tolerance for being around other people's kids. Besides, why get all entangled with a girlfriend and her kids? If she was just looking for inclusion she would be fine being invited over as a family (her, kids, brother), but that's not what she wants.     NTA. Alert-Persimmon7905 I like kids in general on top of having 2 of my own. I wouldn't be comfortable having kids over at that age when I don't know them, and they don't know me., without a parent there. And as a parent, I wouldn't have my kids over at someone's house at that age, without previous experiences. Seems fishy.
